Ash Wednesday is considered as the first day of Lent in Christianity. This annual church activity and tradition is done to fast within 46 days before the Easter season.
Ash Wednesday was based on the gospels from Bible in Matthew, Luke and Mark which tells about how Christ spent 40 days of fasting in the desert and how he endured the temptation away from Satan.
Religious people believe to have their heads drawn with the sign of cross using ashes. The head of the religious group will usually utter this words during the commemoration: "Repent, and believe in the Gospel" or "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return"
