Aspiring lectors attended the first training course for lectors on May 8 at the Mochou Lu Church. The training course aimed to promote the understanding of liturgical rites and the Revised Common Lectionary for worship presiders and lectors; as well as ensure that they are properly trained to read the Bible and its verses.
In the first lesson for the training session, senior pastor Li Lancheng taught the students to understand and learn Jewish traditions on how to read the Scriptures while worshipping God in the time of the Old Testament and determine how it varied with the practice of worshippers in the time of Jesus and in the beginnings of early Christianity. He also said "Modern Christians lack no knowledge, but their ability to hear with their heart and receive God's word is still lacking."
The Mochou Lu Church was established in 1888 by Charles Leaman from the US Presbyterian Church and considered the oldest church in Nanjing. The church was earlier called Jesus Church, but was renamed the Hanzhong Church under Rev. Paul Abbott when he rebuilt the church in 1936. The church was yet again renamed the Mochou Lu Church in 1954. Currently, the church has 4,000 members and they have nine different services and gatherings per week. At least 3,800 people attend their Saturday and Sunday services with baptism rites done twice a year, one before Christmas and one before Easter.
