Anthony Wong, a Hong Kong movie star, took home the Best Actor Prize at 38th Hong Kong Film Awards on April 14.
Anthony thanked his family, friends and a tycoon in HK film industry who offered him financial support during the recent hard time, as well as all adjudicators who either voted or not voted him, and he ended his speech with Psalm 23: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
It was reported that Anthony Wong acted in the film Still Human for no salary.
Oliver Chan, the young director of this film, had been suggested not invited Wong to play the role for his well-known bad temper.
Chan thought Wong was very suitable for the role and invited him to play it.
Wong accepted the invitation without hesitation and required only for HK$ 1 for his remuneration.
Still Human explores the relationship between Leung, a broke mid-aged man, and Evelyn, his Filipino maid.
Evelyn is a university graduate, but gives up her dream of being a photographer and goes to Hong Kong to be a domestic worker because of difficulties of her family. Leung is paralyzed below his chest because of an accident, and his wife and sons have left him. He is a loser who is even incapable of committing suicide.
In their contact, the two begin to understand each other. Evelyn takes care of Leung who helps Evelyn make her dream come true. It is a story of a disabled man and a maid in economic strike.
Anthony Wong's interpretation of the role is remarkable for his mother used to be a maid. Therefore, he understands them deeply. He said that this film is about dream, sacrifice, and friendship, as well as respect and equality.
