On April 13, 2019, the Suzhou Christian Council & Three-Self Patriotic Movement (CCC&TSPM) of Jiangsu province held a lecture about Chinese Christianity history in Dushu Lake Church.
More than 130 local pastoral staff and students from Jiangsu Theological Seminary attended it, according to the Suzhou CCC&TSPM.
Professor Liu Yi from the Department of History of Shanghai University first recalled the efforts and achievements of Chinese Christianity in the independence, indigenization, contextualization, and sinicization movement.
He then analyzed some cases of local church movements initiated by Chinese Christians. He shared how they developed schools of their own in aspects of individual spiritual life, independence and self-management, as well as the emphasis of nondenominational organizations under the influence and guidance of leaders with distinctive characters and conservative theological convictions.
In addition, he gave suggestions on how Chinese Christianity could enhance its self-quality and maintain the orthodox traditions to keep open and be confident based on his academic research and personal experience.
