In some village churches in Handan, Hebei Province, the main tools for sermons are still blackboards and chalk. When seeing young co-workers use laptops and PPT to preach, Ji Zhichang, a presbyterian over the age of sixty, got an idea of learning how to use computers. Now Ji has used computers to give sermons for five years.
When a reporter talked about giving sermons using a laptop, Ji laughed, "It's God's grace!" Then he shared his way of learning how to use computers.
Ji began learning how to use computers at the age of 62. Facing new materials, he truly made a big effort. He described his beginning state as "disregarding meal times without sleep" (which means he is concentrating on something completely). He didn't go to computer class but learned with the people around him, applied whatever he was learning while learning it and he got started after several months.
"Nothing is impossible if you work hard. It can be acquired through use," Ji summarized his learning experience. For Ji, the biggest use of laptops is to assist during sermons and to play hymns. Before the sermon, he puts the outline and verses in PPT. During the sermon, he plays the PPT so that it can help him preach with focus and also help believers focus on the content better.
"You will be regretful if you serve Lord after retirement!" In a sermon, Ji advised Christians to use his or her talents to serve Lord. He believes it's sinners' glory to serve the king in heaven. He does his best to serve God while advising others.
