On April 25, 2018, the official Sina microblogs of the public security departments of Jiangsu Province and of Nanjing published a public notice against the cult "Eastern Lightning".
The document urged the cult organizations to give themselves up to the authorities and reminded its adherents under coercion to recognize its cult nature and social harm and to leave it. Whistleblowers will be awarded money ranging from 500 to 5,000 yuan.
Eastern Lightning Cult, or the Almighty God, is recognized by China as a cult and was founded by Zhao Weishan in 1993. It spreads its dogma through books, audio-visual materials, and rumors. It incites its followers to abandon their families and "devote" themselves to God.
