On Wednesday, the Chinese Ministry of Education has reported a drop in the country's 'left-behind' children statistics in 2015, recording a drop to 560,000 children from the increased values in 2014.
In the ministry's annual report, at least 20.19 million "left-behind" children have attended rural primary and junior high-schools in 2015 which was an improvement from the 20.75 million children reported in 2014. These left-behind children are children left by their parents to their relatives - most often, their grandparents - as the parents move into the cities to locate work.
In the same report, the number of rural children who started attending city schools where their parents are employed have also increased throughout 2015 by up to 720,000 to 13.67 million.
The report and other assessments cited that the national household registration system ("Hukou") is the major reason why migrant children do not have access to urban public schools. However, this is now starting to east up in several cities throughout the country.
